Long before Columbus, the Indians were enjoying pecans as a daily part of their diet. Then as now, pecan lovers appreciated the fact that pecans could be stored through the winter or taken along on seasonal migrations.
Early commercial growers of pecans included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In the 19th century, botanists began to improve the quality and size of pecans, so that today there are hundreds of varieties of the pecan. And throughout America, an average of about 220,000,000 pounds of fresh pecans are produced each year! The pecan — “Made in America” and loved by Americans for centuries!
